Why tracing is more fun with dragons
This theme instantly grabs attention. When you’re working with a preschooler or kindergartener, that interest boost makes a big difference.

One of my son’s favorite shows on Netflix is Dragons: Riders of Berk, a spin-off of the movie How to Train Your Dragon. This inspired my Dragon Tracing Worksheets. He’s definitely beyond these, but my daughter, who loves the show as well, will have a blast with them.
My oldest read the How to Train Your Dragon books and was disappointed in the changes they made to the characters in the movie. However, he’s a huge stickler for no change, he hates it when movies deviate from the books.

Supplies needed for dragon tracing practice
This is one of those printables that doesn’t need much to get going. Here’s what I like to keep on hand when we use them:
- child-safe scissors
- pencil or crayon
- printable pages (printed on cardstock if you want extra durability)
- optional: dry-erase pockets and markers for reuse

What’s included in the dragon tracing pages?
This set has 4 pages total. Two are focused on cutting lines, and two on shape tracing.
Cut along the lines (pages 1-2)
The first two pages focus on scissor practice with a mix of straight, zigzag, curved, and bumpy lines. Each line features fun medieval elements like dragons, swords, helmets, or axes. Page one has simpler paths for beginners, while page two offers more challenging curves and shapes. These were always a hit in our house, especially when my kids were first learning to control scissors.
Trace along the lines (pages 3-4)
The last two pages of the set focus on tracing shapes, each with dragons or medieval icons inside. Page three includes a triangle, circle, square, and hexagon. Page four adds in a star, rectangle, and some more unique outlines like a flower-like shape and octagon. The variety helps keep kids interested and gives them lots of chances to practice control while recognizing shapes. My kids used to love naming the shapes as they traced.
How to extend the activity
If your child finishes quickly or wants more, there are a few easy ways to stretch this out a bit.
- Make a tracing sensory bin: Fill a tray with dry rice or salt and use fingers or sticks to trace shapes from the worksheets.
- Use printable word formation cards: Pair the tracing with these fine motor skills word printables. My daughter used these right after the tracing pages to practice making simple words.
- Add lacing cards: These printable lacing cards work well as a follow-up and help with the same hand-eye coordination.
- Do a dragon craft: Use construction paper and glue to create your own dragon tail or wings.

We’re just finishing up the book series and we’ve watched all the movies and most of the TV shoes too. My boys could not believe how different the books and movies were from one another.

Just an FYI, I cannot get the tracing or cutting lines to print on any of the worksheets. I’ve tried two different printers and different settings on each, but it still doesn’t work. The graphics are fine. It’s just the dashed lines that won’t print.

I’m not sure what’s going on but I’ve tested it on my Brother laserjet and my inkjet and they are both printing normally. I’ll ask around to see if anyone else is having issues.
