Surprising Dinosaur Facts to Share with Toddlers

Dinosaurs are already fascinating, but these lesser-known facts can make storytime even more exciting.

  • Some dinosaurs had feathers: While not all of them could fly, many species, such as Velociraptors, had feathers for warmth or display.
  • Dino footprints became fossils: Footprints left in mud millions of years ago have been found preserved in rock.
  • The Stegosaurus had a tiny brain: Despite its large body, its brain was only about the size of a lime.

When we needed quiet play ideas during my children’s early years, dinosaur-themed toys were always a hit.

Ways to Make Dinosaur Learning More Engaging

Toddlers respond well when learning is brought to life. Here are a few ideas that worked well in our home:

  • Read together often: Simple books with repetition and fun sounds help build early literacy skills.
  • Get hands-on with play: Using figures, puppets, or simple crafts like DIY felt dinosaurs and papier-mache dinosaur land helps them act out what they’ve read and bring stories to life.
  • Use themed sensory bins: A bin with toy dinosaurs, kinetic sand, and rocks creates a fun, open-ended play opportunity. You can also try this fun dinosaur dig activity.
  • Bring in movement: Pretending to stomp and roar like dinosaurs kept my younger kids engaged while learning new words.

Simple printable packs can support early skills without overwhelm. I kept these two in regular rotation.

What can toddlers learn from dinosaur books?

Books can be more than just fun. Here’s what they’re picking up without even realizing it:

  • New vocabulary: Words like “herbivore” or “fossil” build early science language.
  • Story comprehension: Following a clear beginning, middle, and end helps build pre-reading skills.
  • Social themes: Many books illustrate how characters express, share, or manage big emotions.
  • Animal recognition: Repeated visuals help with identifying common dinosaur types, such as T. Rex or Triceratops.
