How to do the popcorn science activity
We gathered all the materials and set up our little experiment on the kitchen table. My kids were already buzzing with excitement, ready to see what would happen.
We filled the clear container with water, added a bit of baking soda, and stirred it together, just the beginning of the fun. They were asking a million questions, trying to guess what might happen next, and it was wonderful to see their curiosity shine.
As we added the corn kernels, their eyes grew wide. They kept asking if they would really start to dance and what might make it happen. I loved seeing them connect the dots between the ingredients and their effects.
The anticipation was so much fun, and they eagerly waited for the next step, hands ready for the vinegar to make its grand entrance.
When the vinegar went in, the corn kernels started moving! It was like magic, and their reactions were priceless. They were fascinated by the way it all worked together and kept asking to try the experiment again.
It was such a simple activity, but they got to learn about reactions and experiment with cause and effect, all while laughing and having a blast. It was a perfect moment of fun and learning all rolled into one.
How does this experiment work?
This experiment works thanks to a simple chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar. When you mix the two, they create bubbles and gas, which causes a fizzy effect. The corn kernels float on top of the mixture, and when the reaction happens, it pushes them up and down, making them seem like they’re “dancing.”
