Curious Carnival Facts Kids Love

Carnivals have a quirky history and traditions that make for great conversation starters. I tossed out some of these facts when we played bingo, and the kids were fascinated.

  • Some early carnivals featured human chess games where costumed players moved across giant boards.
  • The term “midway” comes from the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, referring to the area with rides and games.
  • In the early days, steam engines sometimes operated carnival rides or were even hand-cranked by workers behind the scenes.

For moms who love adding books to activities, I found a few charming picture books about carnivals that kept my older two glued to the pages before bed.

How to make bingo enjoyable for kids?

The beauty of bingo is that it’s simple to set up and always brings a smile. To keep things lively, we turned it into a mini competition with stickers as prizes. Even my toddler enjoyed the fun by pointing to the bright images while we called out the cards.

Choosing a carnival theme made it extra engaging. The images are so familiar and colorful, it pulled everyone into the moment right away. It didn’t feel like an educational activity, but I saw how it was helping them recognize objects, follow directions, and pay attention—without complaints.

Supplies You Need for this Homeschool Carnival Bingo

You don’t need a lot to get started, but here are a few things that made the experience smoother for us:

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
