Fascinating Facts About Camping

Camping might feel like second nature to us, but to a child, it’s full of new sights and tools. Here are a few cool tidbits to help bring more meaning to your learning time:

  • The earliest tents date back over 40,000 years. Ancient nomadic cultures used animal skins stretched over wooden frames, essentially a prehistoric camping setup.
  • Campfires can reach temperatures over 1,100°F. That’s hot enough to melt some metals, so it’s no wonder we only roast marshmallows at the edge.
  • Sleeping bags were initially made from animal hides. The design has changed a lot, but staying warm at night is still the primary goal.

Pair these printables with a few picture books to round out the experience. I like to read before the activity so that they’re already thinking about camping gear, fire safety, and nature.

Why are dot marker activities perfect for preschool camp themes?

These kinds of worksheets are great for kids who need something both visual and tactile. Here’s why I keep them in our weekly rotation:

  • Builds hand-eye coordination: Kids have to line up their marker or sticker with the dot, which helps improve their aim and control.
  • Gives a break from traditional coloring: Sometimes it’s nice to offer something less detailed but still creative.
  • No prep needed: Print, grab markers, and you’re good to go. Easy days are necessary sometimes.

My Favorite Camping Printables

If you need more printable ideas, I have two other camping packs that my kids really enjoy. They’re great for pretend play and focused learning without needing screens.

Skills Kids Practice with Fine Motor Printables

These worksheets aren’t just about dots and markers. They actually help with early skills that form the base for reading and writing.

  • Fine motor control: Dotting inside the circles helps strengthen the small muscles in the fingers, which later helps with pencil grip.
  • Word recognition: Each page includes a traceable word that connects the object with its label, building vocabulary naturally.
  • Visual tracking: Following rows of dots helps with left-to-right eye movement, which is essential for reading.

If you’re doing a full camping theme, I like to add pretend gear or real tools made for kids. It adds so much more interest to the topic.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the camping dot coloring worksheets?

Backpack

This sheet features a large camping backpack with plenty of space to dot. The traceable word “backpack” underneath helps tie in vocabulary.

Tent

A sturdy dome-style tent with lots of open space makes this page ideal for new learners. It has the word “tent” in dotted lines for easy tracing.

Lantern

The lantern image is tall and bold, easy to recognize, and has plenty of dot circles. The word “lantern” below the picture supports reading skills.
