This printable sentence starters dice game gives kids a fun way to practice writing without it feeling too formal. I found that activities like this helped my older kids practice sentence building in a hands-on format that kept them thinking, reading, and creating simultaneously.

Supplies Needed for the Sentence Starter Dice Game

• Printer (I have this one)
• Colored cardstock
• Glue
• Double-sided tape

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s Included in the Printable Dice Game?

This printable writing activity includes six usable pages after the intro pages, with two subject dice, two verb dice, and two predicate dice. I liked that the mix of silly characters, action words, and location phrases gave my older kids plenty of sentence starter combinations for creative writing and grammar practice.

The subject pages feature fun options like animals, people, and playful characters, while the verb pages offer strong action words like wrote, baked, and wandered. The predicate pages finish each sentence with simple place phrases like at the park, in the cave, and on the airplane, which made this homeschool writing printable easy to reuse for sentence building, story prompts, and language arts review.

How do you create this dice game?

To make these funny sentence-starters dice, print them in black and white on cardstock. The dice are labeled (subject, verb, and predicate), just in case you want to print them all on white cardstock, but printing them on colored cardstock is best for the sake of the game.

I printed these in three different colors of cardstock to differentiate the subject, the verb, and the predicate. In my case, the subject dice are blue, the verb dice are pink, and the predicate dice are green. You can print yours in any color you prefer for you or your kids.

Cut around the dice, then fold over the grey tabs. Use tacky glue to put the dice together. Tacky glue glues really well and very fast, which is why it is my favorite glue. Double-sided tape will work, too, but it’ll be harder to press on each corner to be sure it won’t come apart in time.

How to play the sentence starter game?

To play the game, pick one subject, verb, and predicate die and roll. Arrange them in that order, read the sentence, and take time to think about the sentence. And then there’s the writing part. Taking the time to write sentence starters will help kids practice penmanship and also start thinking about sentences, paragraphs, and stories. These sentence starters for kids will definitely get them started with writing.

Aren’t these super fun? You can make these dice with interesting sentence starters that change every time the dice get rolled! These printables have six DIY dice: two subject dice, two verb dice, and two predicate dice. This list of sentence starters does not necessarily create a complete sentence, but they sure get your thoughts rolling in that direction.

Ways to Extend the Activity

Once my kids had rolled a few combinations, I usually tried to extend the activity beyond a single worksheet session. That made this printable sentence starters game even more useful for homeschool writing, grammar review, and creative thinking.

• Try another sentence starter printable: Use this related activity for more sentence writing practice.
• Add an all about me writing tie-in: Follow up with a personal writing page so kids can switch from silly sentences to real-life ideas.
• Turn the rolled sentence into a short story: After building one funny sentence, have your child write three to five more lines about what happened next. I used this idea when my older kids needed extra writing practice, because it helped them move from a single sentence to a full paragraph.
