Winter Facts for Kids

Winter is a fun time of year for kids, but it’s also a great time to learn about the weather and how it affects the Earth. Here are some fascinating facts about winter that your kids might not know:

  • Winter is the coldest season of the year. This is because the Earth’s tilt causes the North Pole to be further away from the sun in December than it is in June. As a result, the Northern Hemisphere receives less direct sunlight, leading to cooler temperatures.
  • Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but air can get much colder than that. In fact, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth was minus 128.6 degrees Fahrenheit in Antarctica!
  • Snowflakes are each unique, and no two are exactly alike! Snowflakes form when water vapor in the air cools and condenses into ice crystals. As more ice crystals attach to the snowflake, it grows larger and starts to look like the flakes we see falling from the sky.
