Fun Facts About St. Patrick’s Day

Before you grab the free printables, here are a few fun facts about Saint Patrick’s Day that you can share with your child:

  • St. Patrick wasn’t actually Irish. He was born in Britain and was brought to Ireland as a slave. Later, he returned as a missionary to spread Christianity.
  • The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in America. It happened in New York City in 1762, not Ireland.
  • The original color of St. Patrick’s was blue. Green became associated with the holiday because of Ireland’s nickname, “The Emerald Isle,” and the use of shamrocks in St. Patrick’s teachings.

Why Learn about St. Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick’s Day celebrated on March 17th, is more than just a day to color green and wear festive attire. It’s an excellent opportunity to teach kids about Irish culture, history, and traditions. Even if you’re not Irish, celebrating different holidays helps kids appreciate cultures outside their own.

Use it as a day to talk about legends like leprechauns and the pot of gold, explore the meaning behind four-leaf clovers, and do fun learning activities like this printable pack.
