Fun Sea Turtle Facts for Kids

Sea turtles are some of the most amazing animals in the ocean. They’ve been swimming through the seas since the time of the dinosaurs and have some pretty cool abilities that help them survive. Take a look at some of these facts about them:

  • Holding Their Breath – While most come up for air every few minutes, some species, like the green sea turtle, can slow their heart rate and stay underwater for over five hours while resting.
  • Moonlight Path – When baby sea turtles hatch from their eggs, they use the light from the moon reflecting on the water to guide them to the sea. This is why artificial lights near beaches can confuse them and make it harder for them to reach the ocean safely.
  • Oldest Animals – These ancient reptiles have survived through massive changes on Earth, even outliving the dinosaurs. Their hard shells and ability to live in different ocean environments have helped them stick around for so long.

Check out these cool books! I LOVE finding new books for the kids to enjoy! The learning that comes from the pages of books is something truly wonderful.

I’ve found that the more books the kids can read, the more that they crave even more of the topic. And isn’t it truly amazing that there are so many books out there that talk about the same things but put them in different words and topics?

This is why you literally can never have too many books. Some of these books have real pictures of sea turtles while others are cartoon. I recommend having a mixture and a variety of both so that the kids can have them all.

How long does a sea turtle live?

While it can be hard to pinpoint, sea turtles live for a very long time! In some instances, they live longer than 50 years! On average, however, the life of a sea turtle is going to be between 20-30 years.

This fun fact is something that the kids LOVE to talk about. We’ve had so many conversations about what sea turtles do for 50 years of life.

The kids will find it funny trying to imagine an “old man” turtle living their best life!

However, as of now, they are classified as endangered. This is an important topic to talk about with the kids as well so that they know the dangers that surround the love of sea turtles.

Once we found out that the sea turtle population was declining, we had a great conversation about doing our part to spread awareness about sea turtles as well.

The kids were super focused on learning all that they could about sea turtles in the hopes that they’d be able to help them get off the endangered species list.

Right up there with books, I love having themed toys for the kids to play with as well. Some kids are readers and some are more visual learners and this is why I love both.

All of these toys are great learning resources for the kids and good for creative play, too. The more toys that you can add in, the more engaged that the kids are going to be.

No matter if your child loves stuffed animals or is looking for a more STEM-centered activity for kids, you’re certain to find something impressive on this list.

Great ideas for birthday and Christmas gifts, too!

How to make this Sea Turtle activity more engaging

I feel like I talk about this a lot but there’s a reason for my madness. When it comes to pairing up learning with reading, they do pair perfectly together. I’ve found that for various topics, I can sit and talk until I’m blue in the face to the kids and they just stare at me…but if I give them the tools to learn on their own, they’ll happily take that momentum and use it to educate and teach me as well.

This is why I like to do themed learning with the kids and use that learning method to match up with books, too. The kids are much more likely to sit down and open up a book about sea turtles than to sit and listen to me talk for a long time about sea turtles.

And since there are so many great books out there about everything, it’s easy to find a handful of great books for the kids to read. That way, they’re taking charge of their learning and reading the words on the page.

This gives them the drive and independence to want to learn more while balancing the need for some extra help, too.

I’ve been giving the kids books for years and have no plan of stopping anytime soon. I’ll gladly invest in books to help them continue that reading and learning.

What I love about this simple diagram for kids is that it works perfectly for a wide variety of ages. The kids love labeling the parts and I love to see them get excited about more turtle learning.

If you’re planning a trip to the beach soon, these worksheets are a great learning activity to have on hand for the kids. We spent some time before heading to the beach to talk about sea turtles so we’d know what to expect when we saw them! The kids were always on the lookout for them.

If your kids love the ocean, an ocean-themed activity kit is a great way to bring the underwater world home. With fun printables and engaging activities, kids can learn about sea creatures, practice early learning skills, and enjoy hands-on fun, all without getting wet.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the sea turtle diagram for kids?

The sea turtle diagram for kids includes two interactive sections:

  • Cut-and-Paste – Children can match labeled parts of the turtle to their corresponding illustrations. This hands-on activity encourages fine motor skills and reinforces their understanding of sea turtle anatomy.
  • Fill in the Blanks – This portion features a word bank that helps kids identify and learn key terms related to sea turtles, enhancing their vocabulary.

Together, these elements provide an engaging and informative learning experience that improves their knowledge of these fascinating marine creatures!
