Interesting Facts About Pumpkins

Pumpkins aren’t just for pie and Halloween decorations. They have a fascinating history and unique qualities that kids will love to learn about.

  • Pumpkins are technically a fruit: Since they contain seeds, pumpkins fall under the fruit category. However, they are often treated like vegetables in cooking.
  • Pumpkin seeds were once used as medicine: Centuries ago, people valued pumpkin seeds for their health benefits, including remedies for digestion.
  • Pumpkins can grow really big: Some varieties weigh over 1,000 pounds. Imagine showing your child a picture of one of those giant pumpkins.

Pumpkin Books

Pairing seasonal books with worksheets adds another layer of fun. I’ve found that reading pumpkin-themed stories always makes activities more meaningful and memorable for younger kids.

How to Make Learning About Pumpkins Fun While Improving Scissors Skills

Cut-and-paste activities are more than just busywork. They build important fine motor strength while keeping kids engaged.

  • Cutting shapes: Kids get to practice cutting on lines and curves, which strengthens hand muscles.
  • Sorting sizes: Moving pieces into order helps them visually compare objects and recognize differences.
  • Matching pictures: They develop problem-solving skills while figuring out where each piece belongs.

I also love using themed packs that go beyond one activity. Fall resources add variety and help children see connections between seasons, harvest, and daily life.

Supplies Needed

You won’t need much to get started with this activity, which makes it easy to set up.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue stick

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

Hands-on pumpkin-themed toys are another fun way to extend learning. They give children a chance to apply what they’ve learned in a playful setting at home.
