Pirate Facts Kids Will Love

Pirates have fascinated kids for generations. Sharing a few unexpected details makes the theme even more engaging.

  • Pirates had rules of their own. They often followed a “pirate code” to divide treasure fairly and keep peace among the crew.
  • They didn’t always bury treasure. Many pirates spent their loot quickly on supplies or entertainment instead of hiding it on islands.
  • Parrots weren’t common pets. While pirates are often shown with parrots, most sailors kept cats or monkeys to control pests and for company.

Recommended Pirate Books

I’ve found that pairing worksheets with storytime helps kids connect the activities to something bigger. Pirate-themed books add an adventurous touch and help kids imagine the life of sailors on the seas.

How a Pirate Theme Helps Teach Lessons

Using a pirate theme makes lessons feel less like work and more like play. When children are pretending to be pirates, they naturally practice important skills without even realizing they are learning.

  • Storytelling and reading. Pirate adventures inspire kids to imagine and retell stories, which strengthens vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Counting treasure. Whether it’s coins, swords, or barrels, counting pirate items turns math practice into an adventure.
  • Problem-solving. Pretending to sail a ship or find a treasure map encourages kids to think critically and make decisions.

Supplies You’ll Need for this Pirate Printable

Getting started is simple. Here are a few things I suggest having on hand.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the pirate activity pages?

Pirate Beginning Sounds

Kids look at pirate-themed pictures and color the letter that matches the beginning sound. This makes letter recognition more playful.

Pirate Count and Graph

Children count the pirate images and color squares on a graph to represent each one. It’s a simple introduction to data collection.

Pirate Dress-Up

Students cut and paste clothing words like “boots” and “sword” to label the pirate. They also trace the sentence “I am a pirate.”

Pirate Counting

Children count groups of objects such as swords, barrels, and octopuses, then write the number in the box. It helps with number sense up to ten.

My Pirate Flag

Kids design their own pirate flag and trace the sentence “This is my pirate flag.” It’s a creative way to combine art and writing.
