Fascinating Facts About Sea Turtles
Sea turtles are more than just pretty shells in the ocean. I found that sharing fun facts kept my kids interested and prompted them to ask great questions. Here are a few that sparked some curious conversations in our home:
- Sea turtles don’t retract into their shells. Unlike land turtles, sea turtles can’t hide inside their shells for protection. Their shell is streamlined for swimming, not for hiding.
- They can hold their breath for several hours. When at rest, sea turtles can slow their heart rate and remain underwater for up to seven hours. That surprised my kids, and honestly, me too.
- Their gender is influenced by temperature. Warmer nest temperatures tend to produce female hatchlings, while cooler nests often result in males. We had a fun chat about how that works in nature.

Parts of a Sea Turtle and Their Functions
Learning the parts of a sea turtle gives kids a clearer picture of how these amazing animals survive and move through their ocean world. As they label each section, they also begin to understand what those body parts do and why they matter.
- Eye: Helps the sea turtle see clearly underwater and spot both predators and food.
- Beak: Used to bite or tear food; it works like a sharp mouthpiece with no teeth.
- Head: It holds the sensory organs and connects to the body, allowing for movement and control.
- Flipper: Acts like powerful paddles to help the turtle swim smoothly through the water.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

This page features a labeled sea turtle with each part clearly marked: eye, beak, head, flipper, plastron, tail, and carapace. Use this as your reference page throughout the activity.
Label the sea turtle with the word bank
The second page features the same image, but with blank labels and a word bank. Kids will enjoy using the reference page to match the words and fill them in.
Cut-and-paste matching page
This worksheet gave my kids a chance to cut out each term and glue it next to the correct part on the turtle image. It was a great way to incorporate some fine motor skill practice.
Black and white version with word bank
This page mirrors the label activity but comes without color. It’s perfect for coloring in or saving printer ink.
Black and white cut-and-paste page
Just like the earlier cut-and-paste worksheet, but in black and white. I suggest you let your kids color the turtle after they finish labeling it.
