Surprising Facts About the Parts of a Flower

Flowers are more complex than they seem, and kids love learning these interesting bits once they get past the usual “petal” and “stem” labels:

  • The pistil consists of three parts: stigma, style, and ovary. It is the central female part of the flower and essential for making seeds.
  • Pollination isn’t just for bees: Bats, birds, butterflies, and even the wind help flowers reproduce.
  • Some flowers are both male and female: They have both stamens and pistils, so they can pollinate themselves.

Why is it necessary to teach children about the parts of a flower?

Learning about flower anatomy might seem like a small thing, but it lays the groundwork for bigger science concepts. When kids start learning how flowers work, they’re building an understanding of plant life cycles, ecosystems, and even how food grows.

For my children, it became a gateway to asking bigger questions: “Where do seeds come from?” or “How do bees help flowers?” It turned a simple nature walk into an impromptu science lesson. The curiosity started from labeling a diagram and led to all kinds of observations and conversations.

You probably have most of these on hand already. Here’s what I suggest having ready:

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s Included in the Spring Flower Pages?

Parts of a Flower Diagram

This is a full-color page showing a simple flower illustration with labeled parts. It’s a great reference for kids as they complete the other activities.

Label the Parts (Color Version)

Kids use the word bank to label each part of the flower on a colored diagram. I liked how this helped my visual learner match the colors to what she sees in real flowers outside.

Label the Parts (Black and White Version)

It is the same labeling activity, but in black and white. Perfect for kids who want to color their own flowers or if you’re trying to save on ink.

Cut and Paste Labels (Color Version)

Children cut out the words and glue them in the right spots on a flower image. My daughter loved this version—she felt like she was solving a puzzle.

Cut and Paste Labels (Black and White Version)

Same as above but designed for coloring. This version is nice when you want to combine art and science.

Fun Flower Activities for Kids to Try

Pair this worksheet with simple hands-on ideas to keep the learning going. One of our favorites was planting sunflower seeds in a clear cup to watch the roots grow.

  1. Spring is a great time to learn about flowers and see where else the conversation goes – birds, bees, weather, seasons, regions… I could go on and on (and my homeschoolers would. 😅) Thanks for a super cute printable, Monique, and for making the April Showers Homeschool Giveaway possible!
