Why do kids need to know about the story of Jonah and the big fish?

The account of Jonah is one of the most memorable lessons from the Bible. Young students quickly connect with the idea of a prophet learning to obey God.

  • Learning about obedience: Children see how Jonah tried to run from what God asked him to do and how that decision led to trouble.
  • Understanding second chances: The story shows that God is patient and gives people another opportunity to follow Him.
  • Seeing how prayer matters: Jonah prayed while inside the fish, which reminds kids they can talk to God anytime.
  • Recognizing God’s care for people: The message Jonah brought to Nineveh teaches children that God cares about every city and every person.

I keep a few trusted story Bibles and illustrated resources on our shelves because they make Scripture easier for young readers to understand during homeschool time.

Skills kids will learn with this Jonah and the Whale Coloring Sheets

Coloring activities may look simple, but they support several early learning abilities for students in grades one through three.

  • Practice fine motor control: Holding crayons and filling small spaces helps strengthen hand muscles used for writing.
  • Build story recall: As children color each scene, they review the events of Jonah’s journey from the storm to Nineveh.
  • Encourage attention to detail: Students notice small details in each picture as they choose colors and finish the page.

Hands-on faith resources are helpful during homeschool because they combine crafts, worksheets, and story practice in one place.

Supplies needed for this printable

Most families already have these materials at home.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons/colored pencils
  • Markers (optional)

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the Jonah and the fish printable?

Cover coloring page

The first page shows Jonah standing beside a large whale, with a banner title beneath it. Kids can decorate the ocean scene while you introduce the Bible account.

Storm and the boat

This illustration shows a boat in rough waves while Jonah struggles in the water. It helps children picture the moment when the storm grew dangerous during the voyage.

The whale appears

Students color a big whale rising from the sea near Jonah and the ship. This page usually leads to great conversation about how surprising this moment must have been.

Jonah in Nineveh

The next picture shows Jonah near a city with palm trees and buildings. It represents the place where he finally shared God’s message.

Bible verse coloring page

This page includes the verse about Jonah praying inside the fish. Children can color the scene while reading the short passage together.
