How Do You Explain Ice to Preschoolers?

Let’s unravel the mystery of ice – a common yet quite intriguing phenomenon in a way that your young child can easily understand.

Ice is simply water that has gotten very, very cold. You know how you put your toys away in your toy box?

Water likes to put its tiny pieces, we call them molecules, away into a tight pattern when it gets cold. When these molecules slow down, they cuddle close together, and form this amazing ice!

The next time when it’s chilly outside, you and your kids can try an experiment. You can fill a small container with water and leave it outside overnight.

In the morning, you’ll see that the water has already turned into a glossy ice.

This is because the water molecules got cold and decided to hold each other in a special way that we can see and touch. And that’s what we call ice!

Remember, every time you see ice, it’s just water feeling a little cold!
