Great Summer Books for Children

My boys love reading and I don’t think you should give up books just because it is the summer.

Once summer hits, we scale back our regular schedule and go to a lighter one. I make sure to cover the basics so that I have more time to incorporate the fun stuff we didn’t get to during the year.

This frees up their afternoons to do as they so please. No matter what time of the year it is, my boys are always into books. We make a trip to the library every 2 weeks and always have 30+ books checked out.

Have fun reading with these great summer books for kids

Here are some of our favourite summer reading books, well actually they would be great for anytime of the year.

For a great time travelling series where your children can learn a bit about history or geography I recommend Time spies or the Magic Treehouse series.

My son loves reading books that are in a series, if he finds a good book, he never wants it to end.

Some of his favourite series are A to Z Mysteries, Jack Stalwart, The Indian in the Cupboard and of course Harry Potter.

He just finished the How to Train Your Dragon Series which he loved and now despises the movie. He wants the movies to stick to the book closely.

Some great classics that M1 enjoyed are Call of the Wild and White Fang from Jack London.

He loved the historical novel Rifles for Watie, he’s a history nut and loves any books about boys and war.

His favourite author is Roald Dahl since his books are full of humour.

And if you want to keep up with history or science you have to read the Horrible Histories or Horrible Science series. They are gross and fun, mostly for them to enjoy, I won’t read it aloud.

M2, who is in K, is in love with Eric Carle books and the Pigeon books my Mo Willems. Otherwise he’s into non-fiction books about animals and dinosaurs.

Did I mention how much I love the library.

What about you, what are your children’s favourite books?

Well, we don’t have favorite summer books quite yet, since my son’s 13 months. But growing up, my family and I usually went to the library every few days, year round. I was voracious reader. I don’t have as much time to read books anymore, but I would like to read the new Khaled Hosseini book.

You’ll have plenty of time for books, I love reading to my babies.

We actually just picked up “The Indian in the Cupboard” as one of our summer reads – both hubby and I loved it as kids!

All I need are my books and I’m content.

Yay for Horrible Histories! There was a sleepover at my house this week (all homeschooled girls), and in the morning they asked if they could watch Horrible Histories on Amazon Prime. We love those books and the show. 🙂
