How Board Games Help Students Learn

Homeschooling doesn’t always have to be books and paper; you can add educational board games to your school day to learn about geography, math, science, and more.

I have always loved using board games because they turned regular lessons into something my teens actually looked forward to. When my older boys were in elementary school, I noticed better retention in math facts, spelling patterns, and critical thinking after we added tabletop activities to our weekly routine.

These learning games build problem-solving, reading comprehension, and number sense in a natural way. Instead of worksheets, my kids practiced strategy, logic, and communication while laughing around the table.

Some games, like Cat Crimes and Rushhour, are great one-person logic games, while others can have the entire family playing together.

If you need something simple yet educational, I also recommend my printable bingo sets. I used them when my older kids were younger to review science topics in a relaxed, hands-on way that still felt purposeful.

These themed bingo printables work well for group learning, co op days, or quiet review time at home. They are easy to prep and fit perfectly into lessons.

What Skills Will Kids Learn from These Games?

Tabletop learning does more than fill time. I saw real growth in both academic and life skills when we made these part of our routine.

  • Logical Reasoning: Planning moves and anticipating outcomes strengthened analytical thinking.
  • Patience: Waiting for turns and finishing a round helped build self-control.
  • Strategic Planning: My teens learned to think several steps ahead rather than react quickly.
  • Reading and Vocabulary: Game instructions and themed cards expanded comprehension skills.

Moms love promoting educational board games to kids, but we know how chaotic it can be when the game pieces or cards start to make a mess. These two board game accessories are perfect to keep those pieces organized while playing.

The first one is a Universal Tray designed for board game pieces or tokens. The one on the right is a very useful and colorful cardholder. Perfect for those with tiny hands.

Grab them both and enjoy a worry-free game night with the kids.

Other Board Games to Consider

If you want to expand beyond science themes, here are more curated homeschool-friendly collections:

You might also try creating a science-themed trivia challenge using questions from your current curriculum. I did this during our anatomy unit, and it turned review into a competitive but productive study session.

Another engaging idea is to pair a board activity with a simple experiment. We once followed up a weather-themed round with a hands-on air pressure demonstration, which helped connect theory to practice.
