Fascinating Bat Facts for Kids
While some kids might think bats are scary or creepy, they are actually unique and helpful creatures in our environment. Did you know that there are over 1,400 species of bats in the world? Bats can be found on every continent except Antarctica.
They are the only mammals that have wings, which makes them unique compared to other flying animals. Unlike birds, bats have a membrane of skin that stretches between their bones to create their wings. This skin is lightweight, thin, and extremely strong! They can also maneuver in tight spaces, and even crawl around on the ground.
Bats are important to our environment because insects, including many species that are pests or transmit diseases, are part of the food they consume. Some fruit-eating bats are pollinating certain plant species and without their help, these plants might not be able to produce fruit!
Another fascinating fact about bats is that they can live for a very long time! Some bat species can live up to 30 years or more! But despite their life longevity, bats are facing numerous threats in the wild, including the loss of their habitat, disease, and more.
So the next time you ever encounter a bat in the wild, it’s best to leave it alone and give it space.
