5 Senses STEM Activities

Below are some ideas that you can try during your homeschool 5 senses science lesson. For the links to some awesome 5 senses STEM activities, check the list at the bottom of this post.

Blind Taste Test Challenge

This activity will help teach your child about their sense of taste. Put together a variety of foods that are different in texture, sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, etc. such as crackers, fruit, vegetables, candy, nuts, etc.

Blindfold your child and have them try each food one at a time – no peeking allowed! As they sample each item discuss what kind of flavors they can identify and why some foods may taste different than others.

Sound Exploration

This activity teaches about sound by exploring different noises found in nature. Go outside and look for things that make noise like birds chirping or the wind blowing through the trees.

Encourage them to close their eyes while listening so they can focus on the sound without distraction from visual cues. They can also experiment with making their own sounds using instruments or household items like paper towel rolls or empty containers filled with beans or coins!

Scratch & Sniff Science

This activity will teach your child about their sense of smell. Gather up different items around the house like spices (cinnamon sticks, nutmeg), flowers (roses), fruits (oranges), vegetables (onions) etc., anything you think would produce an interesting smell when “scratched” or rubbed against something else.

Blindfold your child once more and have them scratch each item one at a time against a surface and take note of what smells come out – no peeking allowed!

Touch & Tell Game

This activity helps build your child’s understanding of texture by going on a textural scavenger hunt around the house!

Have them find objects with different textures such as soft velvet fabric, smooth glass surfaces, bumpy sandpaper squares etc., then bring the items back home and guess what they feel like without looking at them first – this game is sure to keep everyone guessing!
