With the Spring season upon us, once you go outside and spot some butterflies, you can take it even further and learn about the butterfly life cycle and label their body parts as well with these science worksheets. Isn’t Science great?

The caterpillars creep me out, but my kids love bugs, and it’s a great way for them to explore nature. Additionally, I love watching them grow academically and run around trying to stay with the butterflies as they flap their wings!

Talking points you can discuss with your kids include where the eggs are laid, how they develop into a larva, and how they then become a pupa before becoming a butterfly. Pictures and videos are a great way to show kids how different the caterpillars and butterflies look. These life cycle of a butterfly worksheets will take you through each stage.

I also created a butterfly worksheet to learn about the antennae, thorax, abdomen, legs, forewings, and hindwings.

Stages of a Butterfly Life Cycle

Egg

The female butterfly lays eggs on the leaves of plants. This leaf provides food for the larva or caterpillar when it emerges from the egg.

Larva

The larva or caterpillar’s job is to eat as much as it can to grow. Monarch caterpillars grow 100 times their size in only a few weeks.

Pupa

When the caterpillar is done feeding, it will make a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar will go through a metamorphosis, or a change, to become a butterfly.

Adult butterfly

The butterfly emerges from the cocoon in an entirely new form. Its wings are wet and it may take several hours to dry. The adult butterfly’s purpose is to mate and lay eggs to begin the life cycle over again.

Depending on the butterfly species, some butterflies do not feed at all, while a few will drink nectar from plants.
