Why should kids learn about reindeer?

Reindeer are fun to read about, but they also connect kids to real-world science and winter traditions. Here’s why it’s worth adding them to your lessons:

  • They’re real animals: Kids are always surprised to learn that reindeer aren’t just made up for stories. They’re also called caribou in North America.
  • Seasonal learning: Tying in animals that match the season keeps kids more interested and helps them remember what they learn.
  • Geography boost: Reindeer are native to the Arctic and subarctic regions, making it a great way to discuss different climates and where animals live.
  • Christmas connection: Let’s be honest, anything with reindeer in December is an easy win.

Reindeer Books Kids Will Love

Books about reindeer are always a hit in our house around the holidays. Whether it’s stories, animal facts, or Christmas legends, it’s a fun way to build vocabulary and background knowledge.

Skills Kids Build with This Reindeer Printable

These worksheets look like a game, but there’s more happening here than just spotting cute reindeer.

  • Counting practice: Kids count different versions of reindeer and holiday objects, which is great for developing early math skills. The challenge builds as the pages get more detailed.
  • Visual discrimination: They must compare similar-looking images, which strengthens their observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Working memory: Holding the image in mind while scanning the page builds short-term memory, which supports reading and math.

More Christmas printables to use

If you’re looking for more holiday-themed learning activities, I’ve created some Christmas packs that go beyond worksheets.

  • They’re easy to print and don’t require much prep.
  • Perfect for reinforcing handwriting and letter identification during the holiday season.
  • These are great for kids who need help with early math and number recognition.

Reindeer I Spy Game Supplies

You won’t need much to get started, which is a win during the holidays. Here’s what I suggest:

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can utilize their program to send you ink cartridges when your printer runs low on ink.

Sometimes it helps to have a fun prop or two nearby to keep kids engaged. Reindeer-themed toys or stuffed animals make a great addition during reading time or even while they’re working on these pages.

How to extend this activity

If your kids are asking for more or you want to keep the theme going throughout the week, here are some easy ways to build on the reindeer topic:

  • Use these Reindeer Life Cycle Worksheets to add some science. These are simple but informative, and they work well as a follow-up after reading about real reindeer.
  • Try some Reindeer STEM Activities. These kept my daughter busy for a good chunk of the afternoon. We had some laughs trying to build a sleigh that didn’t fall apart.
  • Let your child color their own reindeer story. You can staple blank pages together and have them write or narrate their own version of what reindeer do at the North Pole.
