How long do pumpkins take to grow?

Understanding the pumpkin life cycle begins with knowing how long it takes for these orange beauties to grow.

It all starts with the seed. A tiny seed is planted in rich, warm soil, where it’s nurtured by water and sunlight. Typically, it takes about 90 to 120 days for a pumpkin to grow from seed to harvest. The specific time can vary, depending on the variety of pumpkins and the growing conditions.

The seed sprouts into a small plant, showing off its first leaves known as “cotyledons.” These leaves are crucial as they provide the plant with the energy needed to grow larger.

Over a few weeks, the plant develops larger leaves, tendrils, and stems that spread out, seeking sunlight to fuel its growth. This stage of growth can be fascinating for kids to observe, as the plant transforms almost daily.

The pumpkin plant begins to flower, producing beautiful yellow blooms. These flowers are essential as they lead to the formation of pumpkins.

Once pollinated, the blooms develop into small green pumpkins, which gradually turn orange as they mature. Watching this transformation can teach children not only about plant biology but also about patience and observation.

One year, we tried to grow a pumpkin in our garden, it took a long time to get just one pumpkin. It grew to the size of a baseball.

My boys would run out each day to see how it changed. However, one day it was smashed in, some animal came and had eaten most of it. We were so sad over that pumpkin. But at least we got to see most of its life cycle in real time.

These pumpkin-themed stories are not only entertaining, but they’re also wonderfully educational! Make sure to grab one for your child.
