Young Learners Science Club

Preschool Insect Worksheets have always been one of my favorite ways to make early learning feel fun. When my older kids were small, I loved pulling out simple themed pages like these because they gave us an easy way to talk about bugs, colors, numbers, and pencil control in one sitting.

If you’re planning an insect theme for your preschooler, you’ll also want to see my list of insect worksheets for kids. I like having extra options ready.

These insect pages work well for quiet time, morning work, or a simple science add-on. Keep reading to see what’s inside and how to use them.

Why do kids need to know about insects?

Insects are a big part of the world around kids. Learning about them helps preschoolers notice nature and ask good questions.

  • Build observation skills: Kids notice wings, legs, colors, and patterns.
  • Grow early science knowledge: Bug themes introduce habitats, life cycles, and survival.
  • Support curiosity outdoors: Nature walks feel more meaningful when kids can point out bugs.
  • Create strong vocabulary: Preschoolers learn new words through the theme.

I like pairing these pages with insect picture books because they help my older kids connect facts with what they see on the page.

Skills kids can learn with these free preschool bug worksheets

These insect worksheets cover several skills at once. I liked using pages like this because they gave my daughter practice with tracing, matching, counting, and focus.

  • Start with the easier pages first. I usually begin with matching before tracing or counting.
  • Let your child talk through what they see. Naming bugs and numbers adds language practice.
  • Keep the session short. Short lessons work best for preschoolers.

If your child wants more bug-themed practice, these extra printable packs are a nice next step. I like having a few themed options on hand when I want to keep the learning going without extra planning.

Supplies needed for these insect activities

You do not need much to get started with these bug worksheets for early learners.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Dry-erase pockets, if you want to reuse the pages
  • Laminator, if you prefer a sturdier option

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the insect activity pages?

Kids color the insects and draw lines to the jar. I like this page for visual discrimination practice.

Ways to extend the activity

I usually liked adding one more hands-on idea after the printable. It helped the theme stick without adding much prep.

  • Try more life cycle fun. Use these insect life cycle activities to keep the theme going.
  • Study insect body parts. This part of an insect worksheet is a good next step.
  • Go on a backyard bug hunt. Head outside and look for bugs together.
  • Set up an insect sensory tray. Add plastic bugs and simple tools for hands-on play.
