The Life Cycle of a Jellyfish

Did you know that jellyfish are some of the oldest creatures on Earth? Scientists believe that they’ve been around for over 500 million years!

Jellyfish begin their lives as tiny eggs inside their mother’s stomach. When they’re ready to hatch, they float to the water’s surface and turn into larvae. The larvae eventually settle to the ocean floor where they transform into juveniles. And finally, when they’re fully grown, they become adults.

Interestingly, jellyfish don’t have a brain or a central nervous system. They also don’t have a heart or blood. So how do they survive without all of these vital organs? Well, each jellyfish has something called cnidocytes—tiny cells that can sting—that help them capture food and defend themselves from predators.
