Hibernation and Migration Worksheets

Young Learners Science Club

Hibernation and Migration Worksheets came from one of those winters where we needed calm, focused learning without a big prep list. When my older kids were in early elementary, winter science often turned into short lessons with hands-on pages we could actually finish.

Over the years, I have built a growing collection of seasonal resources, and I always point new homeschool moms to my favorite winter printables for kids. It saves planning time when energy is already low.

This winter animal printable was created for grades one through three and works well during a winter animals unit. If you are teaching about how animals survive cold months, this set fits easily into your routine and keeps kids interested without feeling overwhelming.

Topics to discuss with hibernation and migration lessons

These pages naturally open the door to simple science talks that feel approachable for young learners. I used these conversations when my teens were younger, and they still remember some of the facts today.

  • Seasonal animal behavior: Kids can discuss why animals behave differently as temperatures change.
  • Food sources in winter: This helps children understand why some creatures sleep while others travel.
  • Habitats and shelter: Discuss where animals stay warm and safe during colder months.
  • Movement patterns: Comparing travel and rest builds early critical-thinking skills.

I like pairing this printable with picture books about animals in cold weather to give kids visual context and gentle storytelling alongside the worksheets.

Skills kids practice with this printable

This set supports early learners while keeping the work age-appropriate and engaging. When my daughter was younger, these types of pages helped her stay focused without frustration.

  • Reading simple animal names and clues
  • Sorting animals by behavior
  • Writing short observations using prompts

Recommended winter printable packs

If your kids enjoy this activity, you may want to add more winter-themed learning pages to your week. These printable packs focus on math practice while maintaining the seasonal theme.

Supplies needed for the activity

You likely already have everything on hand, which makes this easy to use anytime.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the winter animal activity sheets?

Hibernating Animals Word Scramble

This page asks kids to unscramble animal names and then color each picture. It works well as an independent activity or a quiet morning warm-up.

Migrating Animals Word Scramble

Children unscramble animal names connected to seasonal travel. The illustrations help support early readers who may need visual cues.

Migration or Hibernation Sorting Page

Kids look at a list of animals and decide which group they belong in. This page encourages discussion and simple reasoning.

Migrating Animal Research Page

This worksheet allows kids to focus on one animal and record details like size, diet, and habitat. I used similar pages when my oldest was younger, and they made great keepsakes.

Hibernate Here Drawing Page

Children draw a safe sleeping place for a winter animal and label which creature belongs there. This page adds a creative break from writing.

Ways to extend the activity

If your kids want to keep learning, these ideas work well alongside the printable.

  • Hibernation STEM activities – Try simple science challenges using ideas from my list of fun activities.
  • Winter crafts – Check out my collection of hands-on art that pairs nicely with science topics.
  • Nature videos – Short documentaries help kids see real animals in action.
  • Outdoor observation – Talk about which animals you notice less during winter walks.

In the end, this printable is meant to support your homeschool without adding stress. It fits easily into winter science plans and gives kids meaningful practice while learning about animals.
