Fun Facts About the Back to School Season

The start of the school year is filled with traditions, excitement, and a unique history. I love learning interesting tidbits with my kids as we prep for a new season.

  • School used to start in winter and summer. In the 1800s, many rural schools opened only during certain times of the year to accommodate farming seasons. It wasn’t until the 20th century that fall became the standard.
  • September is the most common month for birthdays. That means lots of back-to-school birthday fun.
  • The color of the yellow school bus is scientifically chosen. Yellow grabs attention faster than any other color, especially in the early morning hours.

My Favorite Back to School Books

I always pull a stack of books when we start a new season. These reads make great companions to our printable activities and help set the mood for the year.

Supplies You’ll Want for These Learning Worksheets

You really don’t need a lot to use these worksheets, which is one reason I love them.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

This page is all about helping kids express who they are. They’ll draw, color, and write about themselves, including favorite foods, birthdays, and more. My kids usually get very creative here.

Kids fill in the blocks with their typical daily routine. It’s a fun way to introduce the concept of time and structure, and we usually do this one together.
