The Best Outdoor Building Blocks – A Chalk Adventure

My children love to build. We have different kinds of building block sets, but I wanted to find the best outdoor building blocks that wouldn’t get as damaged and scratched. I found them! Here is a wooden set of building blocks, but they are painted over with chalk paint, so we can now draw on them with chalk!

What is sidewalk chalk?

Sidewalk chalk is a thick, colorful chalk made for drawing on outdoor surfaces like sidewalks, driveways, and patios. It is usually larger than classroom chalk, so it is easier for young kids to hold.

Jumbo sidewalk chalk is great for younger children because it supports a strong grip and helps them make big lines, shapes, and designs. Multicolored sidewalk chalk gives kids more choices for sorting, drawing, labeling, and decorating their outdoor creations.

The Best Outdoor Building Blocks

Take a look. This is just what we did in one sitting and we had an amazing time! This is, hands down, the best outdoor building block set ever! We took our jumbo chalk, our rainbow chalk, and out-think-colored chalk to let our imagination run wild!

First, we imagined that we had a city, full of tall buildings with lots of windows. In one window, there were some crazy neighbors. Then, in the window next door, there was an apartment full of dogs that lived on their own (I don’t know why, hehe). Finally, in the building to the right, only firemen lived there and there was a pole to slide down all the way from the top of the building to the very bottom.

In the middle of the buildings, there was a cute, typical home (my favorite). Then we created different types of transportation. We drew buses and bug cars and bikes. We also made a jet plane and a rocket. And the list goes on…

Before we knew it, giant insects, ugly spiders, and slithery snakes were attacking that city and the brave firemen were sliding down the pole to come to the rescue. They saved the day! Yay! It is always good to have community heroes. My children jokingly said that next time, they would invite exterminators to move into that building, hehe.

Skills Kids Practice with Outdoor Block Play

This sidewalk chalk activity supports several early learning skills while still feeling like play.

• Fine motor skills: Kids grip chalk, draw lines, and place blocks carefully.
• Gross motor skills: Children move around the play space, carry blocks, squat, stretch, and balance while building.
• Early STEM skills: They test which towers stand, compare block sizes, count pieces, sort colors, and explore simple engineering ideas.
• Planning and storytelling: Kids draw roads, signs, and buildings while creating their own pretend play scenes.
• Social skills: Children can take turns, share supplies, explain their ideas, and work together to build a larger chalk town.

And the Chalk Adventure Continues…

We have erased all of our drawings and used our sidewalk rainbow chalk to draw people on the blocks and we make up stories about them. We also drew letters on each side of the blocks and we made up words and drew a picture of that word on another block

For example, we drew a pretty “d” on one block, a fun “o” on another, and a squiggly “g” on another. We put it together and it spells “dog.” Then, we draw a dog on another block to go next to the word. It is so amazing to watch them come up with different words and learn to spell them AND draw the pictures!
