Supercharged Science Review

Have you been looking for a hands-on homeschool science curriculum? I was so excited to review the e-Science Program from Supercharged Science.
Supercharged eScience Review
Supercharged Science is a secular homeschool science curriculum. I prefer to use secular materials for our science program. I’ve actually looked into this program before but cost prohibited me from purchasing it. Supercharge Science advocates teaching science the way I already teach my son, and that’s by doing experiments first and reading about it afterwards. This is a membership site, once you purchase the program you get access to 2 units, and each month after you get two more. For the purposes of this review, we had access to all of the units. Other topics include:Supercharged Science Review
  • motion
  • matter
  • energy
  • sound
  • chemistry
  • magnetism
  • life science
  • biology
Each topic is broken down in various sections:
  • intro
  • reading
  • experiments and videos
  • exercises
To get started with the program you really need to watch the Getting Started video. Each topic is broken down into further subtopics which include resources for each. It can be a bit of information overload at first, but it’s good, you know that there’s great information there for you to use. Supercharged eScience Review Right from there, you can see 7 activities/experiments that you can do to get started with the program. They are meant to hook you into the program and provide that wow factor. We made the simple flying contraption out of a straw and two pieces of construction paper that were taped into a loop. My boys were skeptical about it flying but it flew really well. Unfortunately, no one would give it up and it got destroyed before I could snap a photo. We watched the introductory video together for the topic and then my son, M1, read the introductory info that was provided after we completed an experiment. My son is a visual learner so this has always worked best for us. Each experiment has a printout with the experiment instructions and the exercise lessons, so all you have to do in print it out. Each topic also has a shopping list, some of the items are not things that we would have had around the house. You will need to plan out which experiments you’d like to do so that you can purchase any materials that you may need. There are also answers to the questions as well on the sheet. I love how enthusiastic the author, Aurora, is in her videos and I think it influences my kids so that they get excited to do the experiment too. Supercharged eScience Review Most of the experiments are accompanied by a video, this is great because if for some reason your experiment doesn’t work out, you can see what is suppose to happen. It’s a downer when things don’t work out as planned so it’s nice to talk about what may have gone wrong to see what you could improve. My son decided to start on motion, velocity and acceleration. I let him choose, it wouldn’t have been my first choice, but it’s not something we’ve really covered in depth. One of the experiments had us race a two cans of soup down an incline, one was clam chowder and the other chicken soup to explain inertia. Aurora does a great job of explaining that concept which can be a bit difficult to grasp.Supercharged science review The clam chowder is a solid mass so it loses to the chicken broth since the brother is fluid and moves around the outside of the can while it rolls. The clam chowder has a higher inertia rate compared to the broth and therefore it slows it down. We did it several times and recorded it onto our worksheet. The kids just like having things roll down stuff and ended up adding cars and their other toys to race each other to see who one. My son doesn’t really grasp the concept until he can see it in action. This is why I would see issues with retaining information from what he read. However, once we talked about what was happening with the experiment and then brought in the theory behind afterwards, he retained the information better. I love love love hands-on science curriculum that is meaty. Sometimes curriculum that is heavy on experiments, don’t give enough theory, or sometimes it’s the other way around. There’s too much info and not enough experiments. I really enjoyed this program. It does take some planning to get those experiments done, but it’s laid out for you so that you can pick and choose which experiments you’d like to do. There’s so many choices for each top that range from simple to complex. Some of the items can be more difficult to get like some of the chemicals but the kids really enjoyed it. I know cost is a factor as it was for us so it’s definitely something to think about. The e-Science Premium Membership is for students in K-12 for $57 per month, if you only want the K-8 levels then it is $37/month. If you’d like to test drive Supercharged Science you can check out their FREE mini course. Better yet, you can gain access to the full e-science program for only $1. Don’t forget to check out their Youtube channel where they have some fun experiment up as well. You can follow Supercharged Science on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, Google +, or their blog.
