Yeast and Balloon Experiment

Watch yeast bring science to life with this easy balloon experiment. Using just a few kitchen items, kids can explore how living organisms create gas through a fun chemical reaction.

Materials

  • 1 plastic bottle clean and dry
  • 1 tablespoon activated yeast or a yeast envelope
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Warm water
  • 1 balloon
  • Funnel

Instructions

  • Use the funnel to pour sugar and yeast into the bottle.
  • Add warm water until the bottle is about halfway full.
  • Gently swirl the bottle to mix the contents.
  • Stretch the balloon over the bottle opening.
  • Set the bottle aside and observe what happens.
