Snow Storm in a Jar

This quick winter science activity helps kids practice observation skills, talk about cause and effect, and stay curious about weather, all with a simple jar setup that feels like magic.

Ingredients

  • Clear glass jar
  • Baby oil
  • Water
  • White acrylic paint
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cup
  • Blue glitter
  • Alka-Seltzer
  • Spill tray optional

Instructions

  • Place the glass jar in a spill tray (optional).
  • Fill the jar about halfway with baby oil.
  • Mix ½ cup water with 1 tablespoon white paint in a measuring cup.
  • Pour the mixture into the jar and let it settle.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of glitter.
  • Break one Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces.
  • Drop in one piece.
  • Watch the snowstorm form.
