Paper Weaving Easter Basket

The kids will love this paper weaving basket.
Author Monique B

Ingredients

  • colored paper
  • scissors
  • gluestick
  • stapler
  • staples
  • optional: Easter eggs

Instructions

  • First, start with the paper Easter basket template: fold a piece of paper in half (the hamburger way) and measure one inch around the top, the open side and the bottom. Make small marks one inch apart, as you go down the folded page to keep track of where to cut the lines.
  • Look at the picture below. You can see how the strips were cut. Make sure your cuts are made on the FOLDED side of the paper and you stop at the 1-inch mark. If your kids are old enough, walk them through it. If not, this part might be better to do yourself.
  • Next, pick the colors of paper that you want for the weaving strips. Fold the papers in half the long way (the hotdog way), which is the OPPOSITE way from the weaving template. Cut strips that are about 3/4 of an inch thick. If you need to, use a ruler and a pencil to make marks on where to cut. Unlike the weaving template, you will cut these strips all the way through.
  • Now, you are ready to begin the paper weaving that kids will love! Set the template paper flat (open) on the table. Pick out out strips for the weaving and have the gluestick handy.
  • Teach your child(ren) how to begin weaving (over and under with the first strip and under and over on the next strip and back to over and under for the third and so on)
  • After you finish weaving each strip, use the gluestick to glue the top and bottom end of the strips to the baskets don't fall apart. Once the entire paper is weaved and the strips are glued down on the ends, fold each of the 4 sides of the paper in.
  • Only fold over 2 strips' worth of paper (see pictures). Crease the folds well.
  • To make the paper weave basket, you will need the stapler, the staples and an additional strip for the basket handle. As you see in the picture, you will bring both corner creases toward each other to create a triangle inside the basket-to-be.
  • Bring the triangle to one of the sides and secure with a staple or two
  • Continue doing that for all 4 corners until you end up with a box. Staple or glue the extra strip on the narrower sides of the box to make it a basket. And there you have it! Didn't they turn out awesome?!
