Ice Cream Volcano Experiment

This science activity uses a pretend ice cream cone to cover a fizzy volcano eruption made from kitchen ingredients. Kids can pour, mix, and watch the bubbly reaction happen right in front of them.

Ingredients

  • 3 waffle cones
  • 3 plastic water bottles
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring
  • Sprinkles optional
  • Dish soap
  • Funnel
  • Knife adult use only
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spill tray with high sides

Instructions

  • Gather your supplies so everything is ready to go
  • Carefully cut the tip off each waffle cone
  • Set the water bottles inside a spill tray to catch the mess
  • Use a funnel to add 3 teaspoons of baking soda into each bottle
  • Sprinkle in some color and a few optional sprinkles
  • Add a bit of dish soap to each bottle
  • Slowly pour in half a cup of vinegar
  • Place the cone on top and watch what happens
  • Repeat the steps and see how each one reacts differently
