Build an Igloo STEM Challenge

Instructions

  • Start by creating a circle or square shape for the foundation of the igloo, stacking your materials to form the walls.
  • Continue building up the igloo, layer by layer, until you’ve created a structure that holds it together.
  • Let your kids experiment with different shapes and sizes!

  • Sugar cubes' rough surface makes them easy to stack, even for small hands.
  • Encourage kids to build an arch, as igloos are supported by arches.
  • Browse images of real igloos and talk about their shapes and building methods.
  • If building an igloo is tricky, remind kids there’s no one right way to make a penguin house and let their creativity flow.
  • Allow kids to incorporate penguins in play, as sugar cubes can turn into ice floes instead of just structures.
