Tablets have become a great tool in our homeschool because they’re a lot cheaper then a personal laptop. They have a lot of great features that can be used for learning and not all of it is just fun and games although there are plenty of those as well.
Tablets can range from cheap to not so cheap and differ in picture quality and storage. But if you want one for your homeschool, you don’t need the ones with all the bells and whistles.
It frees up your main computer
I work from home so I need my desktop to do everything. My boys also need the computer for their school as well since they are using some online resources and classes as well. I would never be able to homeschool them without the wealth of free homeschool programs I’ve found online. Hence we have a laptop for them to use as well. Well, that’s not enough because I have two boys. Sometimes, my younger son just wants to listen to an audiobook so enter the tablet
Tablets are hand held and super easy for little ones to sit a read with on the couch or where ever they please. I know my son likes to sit cuddled up on the couch while listening to his audiobooks. I love that it’s easy for him to use and it’s educational. This also means that it is more susceptible to being dropped so I highly recommend a drop case, and I don’t mean by just the kids, my hubby has dropped ours several times already.
Awesome learning apps
There are a lot of great apps online I love finding new and fun things for my kids to learn. My 6 year old has a lot of great apps and one of my favorites is Brainpop, we use to have an online subscription to the site when I received a discount but it was too expensive for us to renew. Now the app delivers one video each day and the kids love it and always remember to watch it each day.
Great ebooks and audiobooks
We have an awesome audio book program through our local library and I’m always on the hunt for free kindle books to download from Amazon. You can often find classics that are free for download and this saves us from a trip to the library and possible library fines.
Awesome if used in moderation
Tablets can be a great tool for learning, but they will not get rid of our papers and pencils and craft supplies to do everything with our machines. Kids do need to be monitored if they are online and I always limit my children’s screen time because they could and would sit with it all day if they had a choice.
