If you have rabbits running through your yard or your kids just love these cuddly creatures, then you’re going to want to study their life cycle.

You can see them in pet stores and kids just love these adorable animals. They are always seen as prey in animal documentaries but they are quick and can escape those horrid predators with speed.

They can also make their burrows under patches of grass so it’s a good idea to check your yard to ensure you don’t disturb a litter of kits.

What are the stages of a rabbit life cycle?

I like to think of the life cycle of a rabbit as four stages:

Birth

A female rabbit, called a doe, can have 3 to 4 litters a year with one to twelve babies in each litter.

A newborn rabbit is born deaf, blind and hairless. They are entirely reliant on their mothers for care and survival.

A female can have a litter each month during the breeding season because their pregnancies only last 31 days.

Kits

Kits are weaned from their mother’s milk at around 21 days and they start to nibble on plants and grass.

Adolescents

From five weeks and on, yes, rabbits go through the adolescent or teen phase of growing up. They are moodier and can spray urine on other rabbits if they feel threatened. They stay with their mother but can find their own food.

Adults

After a year, a rabbit is an adult and can leaves its burrow to focus on reproducing and surviving.

How long do rabbits live?

Rabbits can live for up to 10 years as pets, but the average lifespan is only 2-4 years when rabbits live in the wild. They have to fight starvation, predators, illness and more when they’re in the wild.

They have to watch out for predators like cats, raccoons, coyotes, wolves and foxes.
