Lapbooks are a great way to bring history alive. No matter what text or spine, you can always incorporate lapbooks into your history study.
We use Story of the World as our spine, or main text for history. However, we always have a lapbook going on at the same time.
Story of the World determines what time period we are working on and then I can choose a lapbook based on that.
We do history 3 times a week. We read Story of the World one day and then my son completes a notebook page for it. On the second day, he works on 2 or 3 booklets for his lapbook. For the ancient period, M1 completed a lapbook for ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. I let him choose the topic that he’d like to study so that he’s interested in the topic. He’s usually read about the topic somewhere and would like to study it a little deeper. The third day is project day where he can choose an activity or just make one up that has to be history related. He often chooses to make something out of salt dough or build with Legos.
What goes into your history lapbook?
There’s always a booklet for
- important historical figures
- clothing, important events
- developments in weaponry – that’s my son’s favorite topic
Basically any topic that you would normally study is broken down and made into a minibook.
If you don’t want to get into lapbooks, you can try these notebook pages from Homeschool Helper, she’s created them for each SOTW volume which is awesome.
Have you made a timeline to go along with your lapbook? This can be a small booklet that is a part of your lapbook, a notebook or you can create giant poster boards, whatever you have room for in your home.
Important figures are a wonderful feature to add to your timeline. Each chapter focuses on one person in history which you can easily find an image and add it to your lapbook and/or timeline as well.
