This week’s letter in ABC blogging is the letter E and today I’m writing about educating yourself. Just as I write about getting your kids to love books, this also applies to learning.
Children watch and imitate you, if they see you reading and learning new things, that inspires them to do the same. You are their role model. They see you accomplish something and they see your excitement and perseverance which sets an awesome example for them. You’ve learned something new and you’re proud of it. They now see that they can do the same.
You can’t spend your day trying to teach your children about loving learning when you spend your day not living what you are preaching. Are you spending your days on social media, browsing at the computer or watching TV but ordering your children to do their school work.
Well, your children are going to see school as something that needs to get done to get to the other good stuff. If you really want to instill a love of learning, you should be learning something new as well.
Education does not stop with age. Education doesn’t stop when school is over, it is a lifestyle. What are your hobbies, what have you put time aside to pursue to enrich your own life?
We plan and plan for our children’s education but forget about our own. What do you want to tackle? When can you set aside time for yourself?
Make it schedule and follow through. As your child sits and reads about history, pull out your own book, take out your own project.
As a blog designer, I jumped into HTML and CSS when my kids were not doing school and after they went to bed. I don’t know everything but I learn something new everyday.
Let your children see you learn, and love learning, it will show them that education does not end at a specific time, age or place. It can happen no matter what age you are and where you are in your life. There’s always something new to master.
What about you, are you learning something new? Let me know about it.
I’m linking up at Ben and Me’s ABC blogging series.
