Digestive System Craft for Kids using construction paper, a straw and yarn and tape.

After the massive mess from our Skeleton craft, I was going for something that was less messy and that involved less glue.

I wanted to ensure that the kids understood that the digestive tract is essentially one long tube. Food travels from your mouth and is digested by all of the different organs before being removed from the body as waste.

So looking at the activity, I just cut out shapes that resembled those organs, I didn’t worry about the size or complete accuracy but I wanted the kids to see how the food traveled through them.

It would go through the mouth, enter the straw, to the esophagus then to the stomach (orange), the liver (yellow), and gall bladder (red) are organs that add enzymes that are needed for digestion.

Then from the stomach, food, or the bolus, travels to the small intestine (yarn) then to the large intestine (blue) before it is eliminated from your body.

Add some great human body books to read, get some human body coloring books, test different foods to see which parts of the tongue can taste salty, bitter, or sweet. Get a piece of string and measure out how long the small intestine is which is about 6 meters or 20 feet long.

Digestive System Craft for Kids Supplies

Gather up the simple supplies to get started:

Directions

  1. Outline a person’s body shape using a white pencil crayon or crayon
  2. Tape down the straw  to show the mouth and esophagus
  3. Add the stomach, liver, gall bladder and large intestines that are cut out of construction paper
  4. Cut a length of string that is 20 cm long and crumple it underneath the large intestines.

I just drew out the organs onto the construction paper with a general idea of the shape of the organ. It doesn’t need to be perfect.

The liver has a triangular shape, the gall bladder with a balloon shape, the stomach with an L-shaped sack, and the large intestines make a C-shape. They go up, across, and down to the anus.
