Apple Tree Tic Tac Toe Game

Young Learners Science Club

If you’d like to add a fall spin to the old tic-tac-toe game, you can create your own Apple Tree Tic Tac Toe Game, which is perfect for fall. This game is timeless, and my son and I both try to outwit each other to win.

Try these apple activities for kids for more learning and fun with apples!

We play this on the ground with sticks while camping, and adding a color variation to the game makes it even more fun. My daughter is a massive fan of games, and she can’t be left out either. She chooses to be an apple because she hates bugs and small creatures alike.

I’m not a fan of worms either, but apples just made me think of worms, so we just went with it. This was created using markers, but you could also paint it.

I know I always like to keep my paper plates, and I have a ton saved for crafts that may arise, and I also use them to hold paint because they’re thick enough to hold the paint and easy enough to clean after the mess.

Why Kids Need to Learn About Apples

I always loved bringing apples into our lessons because it was such a fun and straightforward way to connect learning with everyday life. Teaching kids about apples goes beyond just recognizing a fruit. It connects science, history, and even healthy eating habits. Here are a few reasons why I think it’s worth the time:

  • Healthy Eating Habits: Apples are a familiar fruit that can help kids learn about nutrition and make good food choices.
  • Understanding Seasons: Talking about apple trees helps children understand how fruits grow and the importance of seasonal changes.
  • Connection to History: Apples have a long history in farming and traditions, making them a great starting point for conversations about culture and heritage.
  • Hands-On Learning: From tasting to exploring the parts of an apple, kids get to engage all their senses in the process.

As always, reading should be on your radar! We love to pair up our family games and our learning worksheets with the same themed books. Below are some of our favorite apple books that I hope you’ll love, too!

Skills Kids Can Learn from This Apple Craft

When we played this Apple Tree Tic Tac Toe game, I noticed it wasn’t just about winning or losing. My kids were building important skills along the way without even realizing it.

  • Critical Thinking: They had to plan, consider the other player’s move, and think of strategies. This helped naturally build patience and problem-solving skills.
  • Social Skills: Taking turns, playing fair, and cheering each other on taught them about kindness and communication. These small lessons also appeared during family game time.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Handling the apple pieces and placing them carefully on the tree board provided great practice for hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.

How to make the DIY Apple Tree Tic Tac Toe Game

The great part about this Apple Tree Tic Tac Toe game is that it means the family will be playing together and having a great time. I can’t tell you how many times we played this game, over and over again.

But every time that we play, we laugh, giggle, and bond in a way that I’m so grateful for. We love making memories, playing games, and this is one of our favorites to do.

It’s also special to play because it’s a homemade family game that we’ve created together! We didn’t buy it off the shelf at the store or anything like that, so we love being able to make it and play it.

process on how to make a paper plate apple tree tic tac toe game

Want to start making this tic-tac-toe game? Start by transforming a simple paper plate into the top of an apple tree. Cut it out and color it green to give it that leafy look. Once that’s done, cut the edge of the plate into the shape of a tree trunk and dye it brown to bring the tree to life.

Next, attach the brown tree trunk to the green tree top. This will give your apple tree a sturdy base. Once your tree is assembled, take a marker and draw a tic-tac-toe grid on the green tree top.

For the game pieces, cut out apple shapes and worms from red and green paper. These fun and colorful shapes will make the game even more enjoyable. You can mix and match the colors for a playful touch.

Finally, your Apple-themed Tic-Tac-Toe game is ready to go! It’s a simple craft that turns into a fun game, perfect for a quick and creative activity with kids.

You can even glue a small letter envelope to the back of the tree’s top to hold the apples and worm pieces. I like to keep sets of games together in a large Ziploc bag so you don’t lose any of the pieces, and you don’t tear the game pieces.

How to Extend the Apple Theme

One of my favorite parts about these activities is that they can grow with your child’s learning. Here are some easy ways to expand on the Apple Tree Tic Tac Toe game:

  • Parts of an Apple Worksheet: After playing, we used this worksheet to label and color the different parts of an apple. It evolved into a brief science lesson that connected perfectly to what they had just played with.
  • Apple Science Experiments: Simple experiments like watching how apples brown in air or testing different liquids were fun and hands-on. It opened up conversations about chemistry in a way that my younger kids could understand.
  • Apple Counting Game: We practiced simple math by using apple counters to add and subtract. It maintained the apple theme while incorporating extra practice.
  • Storytelling with Apples: I encouraged the kids to make up short stories about apple trees and harvest time. This brought in creativity and gave them a chance to use their imagination.
